DOT Return to Duty SAP Process

DOT Return to Duty SAP Process

Welcome to R&R Healing Co.'s DOT Return-to-Duty Process Guide!

If you're navigating the aftermath of a DOT drug/alcohol violation, rest assured, you're in capable hands. I'm Alana, your dedicated Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) here at R&R Healing Co., ready to guide you through the return-to-duty process with compassion and expertise.  I work with employers and employees to ensure safety and compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) return to work protocols.

What is the Return-to-Duty Process?

Before you can resume your role in a DOT safety-sensitive position, we'll need to follow these steps together:

  1. Assessment by Alana, Your SAP:

    •  Will conduct a thorough face-to-face assessment, tailored to your unique situation.

    • Based on this assessment, I'll recommend a personalized plan of treatment and/or education.

    • Expect a detailed report outlining these recommendations, sent directly to your employer for review.

  2. Progress Monitoring and Follow-Up:

    • Throughout your journey, I'll be monitoring your progress and offering support every step of the way.

    • A face-to-face follow-up evaluation ensures we verify the completion and success of your recommended plan.

  3. Compliance and Return-to-Duty Testing:

    • Upon successful completion of treatment, I'll send a compliance report to your employer.

    • Your employer (or a potential employer) may then request a return-to-duty test, ensuring negative results. (Rest assured, specimen collection is conducted with discretion and professionalism.)

What if...

  • Positive Test Result: In the event of a positive test, we'll address it promptly, initiating a fresh assessment and treatment plan to get you back on track.

  • Non-Compliance: Your commitment to the treatment plan is crucial. If any issues arise, I'll work with you to ensure compliance and progress.

Follow-Up Testing:

  • Together, we'll establish a follow-up testing plan, designed to support your continued success.

  • The testing frequency and duration will be tailored to your needs as determined by your progress.

What Happens Next?

Following your substance abuse evaluation, here's what you can expect:

  1. Clinical Follow-Up Evaluation with Alana:

    • I'll assess your compliance with the recommendations and provide ongoing guidance.

    • A comprehensive report of compliance will be promptly sent to your employer.

  2. Return-to-Duty Testing Decision:

    • Your employer will decide whether to proceed with a return-to-duty test, based on company policy.

    • A negative return-to-duty DOT drug screen is essential for your reinstatement.

  3. Follow-Up Testing Requirements:

    • Upon returning to work, I'll ensure you're equipped with the necessary support and follow-up testing plan.

    • This typically includes a minimum of 6 unannounced tests in the first year, with flexibility for continued testing over 5 years if needed.
